Traffic Tickets
Traffic infractions are civil in nature and do not carry any jail time. While they do not carry any jail time, they can lead to serious consequences.
There are moving infractions that carry points such as running a red light, careless driving, speeding, improperly changing lanes, violating the right of way, and disobeying a traffic control device. There are also non-moving violations that do not carry points such as not wearing your safety belt, equipment violations, improper parking, and leaving your car unattended.
There are also mandatory moving violations that carry points which require an appearance in court. These include but are not limited to speeding more than 30 miles per hour over the prescribed speed limit, littering, and passing a stopped school bus on the side where children are let out.
All traffic violations must be handled in a timely manner or else they could lead to points and/or a license suspension.
You do not want to get your license suspended. If caught driving on a suspended license, you could wind up arrested and serving jail time. If you are found to have been driving on a suspended license 3 times in a 5 year period you could wind up losing your license for 5 years.
Points are important for a couple of reasons. First, points could raise your insurance rates. Second, points could lead to your license being suspended. If you receive 12 points within a 12 month period you could lose your license for a month. If you receive18 points within 18 months you could lose your license for 3 months. If you receive 24 points within 36 months, you could lose your license for a year.
